Managing Cultural Differences (Ninth Edition). New York, New York: Butterworth-Heinemann. If you have a few minutes to spare, listen to the song below and tell me what you think. Life is short and we are all in this together. It allows me to take a step back and think, maybe it’s me that needs to change my thought process. I tend to go back to that song when I realize I am being judgmental of someone or their actions. Take a look at yourself and then make that If you want to make the world a better place Now why the title, “The Man in the Mirror?” It is one of my favorite songs performed by Michael Jackson and I really like what it has to say.Īnd no message could have been any clearer You can either be a part of the problem or be a part of the solution.

A successful person in life and business will be understanding and tolerant. A person in life and in business should be aware and accepting of these differences. There is cultural diversity right in our own back yards. The United States used to pride itself on being a melting pot and now it seems that no longer holds true. Whether you live or work here in the United States or abroad the rules are still the same. Acceptance opens up the door for understanding and tolerance. One thing I learned about a year ago, when I was going through some issues is that acceptance doesn’t necessarily mean that you agree. The next step after being aware of differences, is accepting those differences. Turns out that once we decided to fit in, it made driving a whole lot nicer. The next day we even stopped while driving to let someone out or turn. We are now aware that this is just how it is around here. To me the key word in the previous sentence is awareness. Diversity is associated with an immeasurable amount of differences that demands awareness in order to live and work together effectively (Moran, Abramson, Moran, 2014).

Since we are not robots, there is diversity in all cultures and subcultures. One could say that it is a cultural thing around here to do that.

This past week it turned into a discussion of why does this bother us so much. Not growing up around here, this drives me and my husband crazy! Traffic gets backed up and we want to get where we are going. Or they stop to let someone out a side street. Driving around where we live people tend to stop so someone coming the other way can turn.
